Warhol Project
Now that you've learned how to precisely add color to a black and white image, let's apply that knowledge in a fun and personal setting. In this project, you are going to paint several renditions of a picture of yourself and arrange it in a grid. A famous artist that used this technique to develop pop art advertising is Andy Warhol. We are going to mimic this technique to create an original, personal piece of art.
First you will use the on-board camera of your cell phone to take your picture. Be creative with your pose so your project will be appealing and interesting! 1) Take your photo against a white wall, but don't stand too close! A shadow will make it harder to use the selection tools. 2) Send the photo to yourself in the highest quality possible. Attach it in an email, and send it to your school email address. 3) Portraits should be in "portrait" layout. You can use things like holding a prop to make it more interesting if you choose. You will apply a filter inside Photoshop to make it look like a black and white sketch, then use your selection and coloring techniques to create the Warhol effect. You want to have a minimum of 3 different colors per box. Remember to use bright colors! |
Project VideoThe files on the right are used in class as practice. That process uses Threshold, and is black and white only. For your final project, you will use a greyscale adjustment layer to maintain the detail.

When you are finished, save the file (in .psd format) to your computer in the Photoshop Folder.
THEN: Export it as a .PNG fpr final submission
File/Export As/Quick Png
Make sure to name the file lastname + first initial + period + warhol.png (ex: balgooyenj1warhol.png).
Don't forget to review the rubric to make sure you are meeting all of the project requirements!

Time to create the real deal!
When doing the staff project, we want to be careful of the color choice. Colors evoke certain emotions, and Warhol was attempting to capture Marilyn's personality in the colors he chose. When doing the staff picture, choose the appropriate colors for male/female, and personality. |
