TIPS:
|
You have learned some very useful tools and features of Adobe Photoshop by now. Now it's time to apply both your newly learned skills and the knowledge we've been learning in class discussions. In this project, you will apply the Elements and Principles of Design to create an original, attractive magazine cover.
Choose your favorite magazine and create a magazine cover like it in Photoshop. Add a picture or two of the typical cover images this magazine would use - these could be products or famous people. Be sure your images are clean and attractive and not pixelated. The size of the project will be 8.5 width x 11 height in inches with 300 resolution. This is LETTER size, PORTRAIT orientation. (If these were going to be sent to an actual print company then you would use 300 as the resolution. We will be printing these compositions!) The kiss of death for a typography comp is to not get the image size correct to start, and later realize you have to redo the entire thing! Be sure to practice unity, balance, emphasis, and proportion! |
Typography Guidelines
- Choose 2 or 3 font / typeface styles
- Headings should be larger, and can use serif fonts
- Subtext (under headings) should be smaller, and san serif
- Be VERY careful about high contrast: light text on dark colors, and dark text on light colors.
- Choose 2-3 font colors, and try to weave them through the document from top to bottom.
- INSERT GUIDELINES that are at least 1/4" from the left, right and bottom margins. Make sure each line of text aligns to it.
- You can pop-out text with a duplicate layer that is contrasting color
- CAPITALIZATION is SUPER important on Magazine Covers. Should you use Title Case? ALL CAPS? lower case? Punctuation? It depends on the style of the magazine, but in general:
- readability is rule #1 !
- since they are article titles, we generally don't use much punctuation
- ALL CAPS can be very attractive
As you work, save your project as a .psd and name it lastname + first initial +magazine.psd.
When you are finished, EXPORT it again as a PNG with the same name (ex: balgooyenj1magazine.png).
Don't forget to review the rubric to make sure you are meeting all of the project requirements!
